


| Keep It Simple! Many times simple is the best and fishing is no exception. Many species of fish bite very well with the simplest of presentations - live bait on a plain hook. Panfish especially respond well to this strategy - Crappies often prefer a minnow on a small white jig, bluegills a piece of crawler under a bobber. |
| Check Your Gear Replace old line, clean and lube your reels and check the guides on your rods. Go through your tackle box and throw out any lures that have rusted or are otherwise unusable. Take inventory of what you do have and resupply as needed. You don't want to be in the middle of a hot bite and run out of your favorite lure. |
| Take Note of Conditions Even before making your first cast observe the water and weather conditions. If the water is a bit stained, consider using a bright colored lure and/or a spinner bait. In clear water you might want to use a smaller, duller colored lure. Take special note of the wind, there are times when fish the wind blown side of a lake can really pay off. |
| Talk to Other Fishermen Many fisherman love to brag about their fishing abilities. Don't be afraid to ask others if they are having any luck and, if so, what are they using and how are they fishing a particular bait or lure. Often times this can cut down on the time needed to find that 'magic lure'. |
| Keep Trying! The fish are there, sometimes it just takes some persistence to get them to bite. Try different lures, different depths, different locations and different presentations.
